Purring to Ground.

The Value of Purring.

When I awakened at 3:30 this morning, I wasn’t sure whether to get up or go back to sleep.

Sakhara soon arrived on the bed and threw her body down with her back against my head and chest.

With my heavy human head partially supported by a pillow and partially resting on Sakhara’s chest, and with my right arm around her body gently touching her feet, I received a purring lesson, although I didn’t realize it at the time.

Sakhara’s purrs are usually very gentle and quiet and difficult to hear, but this morning, with my left ear against her body, they sounded very strong and loud and gentle.  It was delightful to lie there and listen to them.  Is this how kittens feel?

Sakhara told me to breath normally while allowing my breath to go through my feet and out.  Her purrs began to vibrate through me.  Did I actually fall asleep for awhile?  I don’t know for sure.  But when I did notice the time again, I was very relaxed and felt rested.

Later on, I resumed my lesson in a more human way – asking questions and taking notes.

So I asked, ” What was the lesson about?”  (Only a human would have to ask, right?)

Sakhara says:

Purring is a form of grounding.

To be grounded through purring, you must

  • Be in your own body fully.
  • Resonate with the purr of the Earth
  • Breathe in and out through your feet, allowing the purr to vibrate throughout your body.
  • Feel the purr resonate with the Earth’s vibration.”

What if someones doesn’t have a cat?  How can they learn about purring?

Sakahra says,

You don’t have to have a cat to do this, but you do have to know what a purr sounds and feels like.  Then you …

  • Become a cat.  Imagine yourself curled up and purring.  Imagine you can hear and feel the purr.
  • The purr vibrates throughout a feline’s body — all your bodies — in one steady pulsing.  Let your purr spread throughout your bodies.
  • Your body settles gently into the earth.
  • Hear the purr.
  • Feel the purr.
  • Be the purr.

So I sat quietly in my chair and imagined I was a cat purring.  It didn’t take long for me to feel very relaxed and quiet — seemed like only a few seconds, really.  Great teacher!!  Thank you.

Punctuality? Puncturing? Softness? Roundness? Gliding Over? Sometimes, in communicating with an animal, it takes a special effort to get the true meaning of the message. This can be especially true when the message addresses your own personal "stuff." So this morning, when I sat down with Sakhara and asked for a lesson, it turned out that my...

"You are too afraid." FILLING IN THE BACKGROUND Some years ago, Sakhara, who was being kept indoors all the time, told me that "I can't be healthy if I'm kept inside.  I need to be outside a bit.  I'll just stay around the house and yard, but I can't do my job unless I go out."  Her job, as she defined it, was to keep the yard a safe place.  She...

Dear Nedda, I have been following Sakara’s teachings with delight!
Here is a poem spoken to me in the warm morning sunshine of our terrace on a hillside in southern France by our tabby. ‘Her’ in Leaflette’s poem is Mother Earth. (from Barbara & Harold)

    “Her Boundless Purr”
    Ode to Mother Earth
    by Leaflette
    summer 2013

Bright sunlight sparkles in tiny jets from
the very cells of each hair of my fur.
I gleam with the rising of the day,
    alight with true non-purpose,
    Being me.

Imagine then the glints from within
the many ‘layers’ of my eyes!
Myriads, O! myriads of tiny star-systems dancing there
Within ~~~ and all about me.
    Join me? Do!

With this coat of pure Earth design
I blend in, while I radiate ‘out’.
The Trick we (cats and you)
are learning is to expand this capacity
So that we radiate through all Her lovely substance,
wherever cells can respond and come alight,
    re-ignite
    Her Boundless Purr.

I am working on the purring. Still and quiet I know. LIke calm waters at sunrise mist rising . Purring sounds — different, fully actively in tune with the Earth. Purring I like.
